Rev's version is not unlike my answer, which is that kitsch is copying superficial traits, without real meaning or understanding, for the purpose of creating a shallow emotional effect. I would say "often involves reaching back", not "always", personally.
"Kitsch" is also a derogatory-term-embracing aesthetic movement of realist painters based mainly in Scandinavia, but perhaps that's not here nor there.
