1/ I find it hilarious that in V for Vendetta, the news comes out that the disease that allowed the authoritarians to take over was exposed as actually CREATED BY THEM, and the people rebelled and the authoritarian government fell.

2/ ...but in the real world, where we have the actual documents showing that the virus that allowed the authoritarians to take over was actually CREATED BY THEM under gain-of-function research...55% of the population chants "TRUST SCIENCE / FOUR MORE YEARS / NO HORSE MEDICINE!"

3/ There's an entire trope which is "once get this information in front of The People the system will collapse and good will be restored". I first became aware of it when I was like 9 years old, watching Capricorn One on Saturday afternoon reruns.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKbwdTCL8rA …

4/ As a kid, even as an adult, I just accepted this trope as real. ...it was only later that I realized that the trope was entirely invented. It was a framing created for Watergate..

5/ Watergate was penny ante corruption, the kind that happens in more or less every race. Turning this into a capital-S Scandal was an act of creation and orchestration, with air cover from left wing advocacy groups, law groups, and - of course - mainstream media.

Replying to @MorlockP
Also 1) the media still didn’t play as much a part of it as they like to think and 2) the mystery of “deepthroat” played well and hid the “Hoover’s Bagman mad at being passed over in the name of reforming an out of control FBI” reality

I mean, how the FBI avoided more Church Committee style scrutiny in the 70s is beyond me. Even then, rolling up the weakening mafia (especially with RICO) helped them into the modern era. Tho now they’re stuck with made-up stings.

Final note, in the background, a lot of taking down Nixon came from within the government

yep someone else said that the Nixon thing was a civil war between two sides of the deep state - and that's wrong there was only one side of the deep state (the anti-Nixon side)
