1/ I find it hilarious that in V for Vendetta, the news comes out that the disease that allowed the authoritarians to take over was exposed as actually CREATED BY THEM, and the people rebelled and the authoritarian government fell.

Yeah, to the extent that trope of "just put the unvarnished truth in front of people and they'll do the right thing" trope permeated culture, it distracted from the need for actual hard, slogging effort to build the framework for your movement's success.

Interesting, this thread puts the propaganda war between the Capital and the Rebellion in the Hunger Games series in a new light. That’s one storyline where the “good” guys are hustling to form their own narrative instead of “just letting the truth free”.

I think it would be a mistake to think that only the right are pacified by this. The right are indeed pacified by the false promise that every 2 years they have an opportunity to "make a difference" through elections. But the left are also by letting them think protests matter.
