1/ I find it hilarious that in V for Vendetta, the news comes out that the disease that allowed the authoritarians to take over was exposed as actually CREATED BY THEM, and the people rebelled and the authoritarian government fell.

9/ ...as if the NYT and the media has no agency - you just dump true information in to a reporter's in basket, and then The Truth Comes Out, and the Right Thing Happens. Once you know the trope as a trope, you see it everywhere. E.g. Cloud Atlas.

Without the elites coordinating to make the Right Side of the Story clear, and hammer it home day after day, week after week, info dumps make ripples and then fade and accomplish nothing.https://twitter.com/JoeWChristman/status/1493215257669472260 …

Getting the information "made public" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_knowledge_(logic) … used to require a national newspaper or TV network.* The endings of movies like Firestarter or Three Days of the Condor glamorize Rolling Stone and the NYT respectively for this role. *Then it didn't. Hijinks ensue.

That extra work is interesting. At one point, it was sufficient to take a small, but real thing and exaggerate it - craft it into a narrative - and the media could more or less depose anyone they really wanted to. Taking down Trump required much more direct involvement.

The media went all in on Trump, and they barely pulled that off. Their power level may be approaching exhaustion.
