Hard to think of something more jarringly self-negating than 'solarpunk'.

picturing a peaceful solarpunk village where one kid digs up an old diesel engine (Ayn Rand Anthem / Rush 2112 style) and starts playing with it bc loud and greasy and fun, and the pinch nosed scolds tell him that NO you're doing punk WRONG. Punk is not about rebelliousness!

For all its fiddlyness solar panels have one substantial advantage for punk types - they are not dependent on state-controlled centralized distribution scheme. It has it going for it. Futuristic ethanol/methanol fuel cells are probably best of both worlds tho

Point is if you get your hands on a solar panel and move, the panel will work as long as you can get sun shining on the motherlover. If you get a diesel generator, you need to keep coming back for fuel which is nontrivial to "make" yourself lol.

The solar panel comes as manna from Heaven, of course. And its replacement once it wears out accretes from pixie dust. The Diesel engine was patented in 1892, photovoltaics in 1954. I think I've a far better shot cooking up 19th century technology in my backyard than late 20th.

And plenty of internal combustion motors can be run on ethanol with some modifications. Rednecks in the hills can make that work easy enough.
