Two seasons into YELLOWSTONE (ie, less than one season of a network show), Taylor Sheridan is going all-out to answer the Hitchcockian question "what if somebody really GOOD made a soap opera?"

YELLOWSTONE is less one show than a bunch of shows stapled together, some of them better than others. The wrangler show is fantastic and I would watch it as a series in its own right. The Beth vs. Jamie show and the Beth and Rip shows are okay. All else, eh.

Beth is a nasty, nasty person, but Kelly Reilly is fantastic in the part and the character is an interesting wish fulfillment on a couple of levels: a) you don't often see women playing tasty dysfunctional-but-savagely-capable parts b) it's a weak person's fantasy of strength.

As the Vindicated Asshole is a male fantasy wish-fulfillment for the assholes out there, Beth is a fragile person's fantasy of being capable and powerful in terms of manipulating the world despite internal fragility, the Powerful Victim.
