I would look at data usage trends pre and post. There could be a spike in data usage and battery consumption. Then the processes. The easiest way to explain would really just be for them to search how to detect Spyware on (phoneos). If the user is unconcerned on finding who

It's easy to do on iPhone or Android. Things like cydia on iPhone or a number of others on Android. Trends in data usage and battery usage should be indicative. The user could then reinstall a factory image and being back only the data they want to be sure.

Also with many low level users it is common for them to simply have icloud or Google account access which can also give you records to these things. Changing your pw and enabling 2 step would stop most here as well and should be done.
