It's easy to do on iPhone or Android. Things like cydia on iPhone or a number of others on Android. Trends in data usage and battery usage should be indicative. The user could then reinstall a factory image and being back only the data they want to be sure.

you could set the phone to send all outgoing traffic thru a proxy server running burp, then sort through the hosts to find whatever looks out of place. though depending on how sneaky the app is it might be difficult to pick those requests out of a lineup

Sounds like she would've had to root the phone, install the app as system, and then unroot it so he can't see or stop it. If I had to guess his sms messenger might be compromised or there is a hidden app with a fake name running. Root the phone, find whats off, and delete it.

I don't know what kind of phone it is But during my parent's divorce my dad had a bunch of that installed on the iMac in our house. The guys at the local Mac Resource found it during a servicing and could show it to my mom.

Granted these were actual nerds at the repair shop, not just average customer service guys, but they ended up not charging my mom for the repairs because it was so crazy and they had so much fun with it.
