and I think that cooling towers have the constriction for a similar reason ... to take a very slow upward migration of hot air and turn it into a more rapid upward migration ... but I'm not sure why. I also think that this upward flow is intended to draw a vacuum at the bottom >

...much like the bolus of exhaust gases in the exhaust pipe of a 2-stroke engine is tuned to draw a vacuum on the cylinder, in order to scavenge more exhaust gasses out of it (cooling towers have intake vents around the bottom circumference, to admit more atmospheric air)
