So you are punished by 4-7 years in jail BEFORE any trial decides your guilt. U.S. does NOT implement "innocent until proven guilty".

my understanding, from talking to lawyer friends, is that the right to a speedy trial exists, but usually BOTH SIDES agree to waive it, so that the prosecution can work on the case & defense can work on theirs I've always wondered what would happen if defense refused to wiave
