One of my historical pet peeves is Polk cutting that deal. If he kicks the can down the road, he ends his term holding California, with the U.S army having finished an impressive Mexican War. Nearest British naval base was Australia(?). We could have had it all!

I could make a good argument for the border in the "major channel" between US/Canada that gave the US the San Juan Islands. The ranger who runs the park there wrote a pretty good book on it. You can call it "The Pig War" if you want, but only one literal pig (British) was shot.
