When I had my first Real Job I used to come home every night and cry because I didn't know this. Also because of other stuff. But that was probably 60% of it.

my first office job was really exhausting, in retrospect because the owner's whole business model was running through naive bright young things without enough experience to see the red flags

At my job I wasn't given nearly enough work and I spent about half my day just sitting and trying desperately not to fall asleep. I studied algebraic geometry just to try to stay awake.

I had an entry-level exam-track actuarial job where you're given 1/4 time 'off' to study for exams. You're also supposed to spend like 20 hours of your own time a week studying.

I studied at work because I didn't have enough to do, and I took the off time and drove 90 minutes to my old department to do research with my MS advisor. Meanwhile I was passing actuarial exams too quickly and downlow got in trouble for it, but that's another story.

Raises and promotions were tied to passing exams. My salary was going up too fast, and I don't think they had the budget allocated. Also I think some people thought I must be shirking work to be passing so many exams in such a short time.
