1/ you skimmed the thread...at best I didn't claim that doing any of these things is impossible ... I do most of these things myself I plant orchards, plant gardens, log trees, raise chickens, pigs, and sheep, slaughter them, and butcher themhttps://twitter.com/Empty_America/status/1487211234839597058 …

Thing with him is he just insists *everything* is near-impossibly difficult, expensive, etc. Including stuff that other people are demonstrably doing and not finding to be a big deal. I mean @ploughmansfolly is an actual farmer with actual cows and pigs. It's not some fantasy

2/ This stuff is neither impossible nor unbelievably expensive. It is hard and expensive though. What I was criticizing in the original thread (10% of people should grow 0.5 acre gardens IN THEIR FREE TIME) was the casual attitude that this is a quick weekend hobby.

3/ OP raises 10 or 15 pigs on 30 rural acres, as a full-time job, I think. ...and yet he's suggesting that suburban folks could raise 10 pigs on 0.5 acres. His response to criticism is to say that people are "Lolbertardians coping and seething"

Your gimmick is lengthy threads trying to dunk on others by hysterical invocation of every possible problem, difficulty, or obstacle to what they are discussing. Including the most farfetched, like claiming they need their own forge to make readily available tools, etc.

8/ What have I said that's "very negative" @ploughmansfolly ? What have I said that's blackpilled? I think that I'm realistic. I've told people that I consider homesteading fun. I've also told people that a 1/2 acre weekend garden is unrealistic.https://twitter.com/ploughmansfolly/status/1487214059082723338 …

It’s just very negative. I raise 200 hogs a year. Also process and sell them. Yes it’s challenging but not impossible, especially after you’ve gotten past the steep learning curve. I just don’t know why you’re blackpilling. I’m in favor of encouraging people to get started.

11/ Hobby farming is hard work. Butchering pigs is hard work. Having a 700 square foot garden is hard work. I tell people this, and then tell them about techniques to make it easier. ...and you're upset that I'm giving people realistic info?https://twitter.com/ploughmansfolly/status/1487214957636816898 …

Everyone is already under the impression that agriculture, even on the small homestead scale, is prohibitively difficult work. And that’s certainly true at the beginning, which is the overall point of your thread. But it also gets easier with experience and establishment

I have also found most people *don't* want to do these things. They want a small garden to fiddle with and *maybe* a hen. Many don't seem to even want to keep up with chickens for too long. Goes without saying the majority wouldn't raise and slaughter chickens.

Starting small and building up if it's within your means and skill level seems to be a better recipe for long term success than encouraging folks to dive into something they may not be able to handle. I think it's fine if the majority can only handle a vegetable garden.

I don't get why this is brewing controversy. Car enthusiasts similarly advise people to learn to change the oil in their Honda Civics before they try and buy a busted up Dodge Challenger to restore and take on that headache.
