the snowpocalypse in texas last year was the first time to experience vehicles and machines not working due to temp. idk how northern peoples live.

Mostly a matter of insulation and winterization of everything that can't be winterized. And yeah, if the heat ever goes out, figure out who your 24/7 HVAC guy is because you've got hours until the pipes explode. /Also, I don't live in Minnesota.

When I was in HS, it got down to about -30 and they couldn't start the busses fire just that reason. Had to cancel school. But not until about ten minutes before school started, so kids were out there for a long time. And some had already walked to school and had to walk home.

Do you provide your livestock any external heat during temps like this?
-
nope; our sheep are Icelandic - they're bread for this climate (and also wrapped in thick wool !)

To me, the annoying thing in such temperatures is discovering that an unexpected pipe was routed through an exterior wall for no good reason by a fool. Inevitably said pipe has a pathetic insulation jacket around it that does absolutely no good in actual cold weather.
