2/ "but caring about people is good! making life easier is good!" yes ... but also, incentives matter the easier you make it to break up a marriage, the more marriages will be broken up "but the people involved WANT to break it up" perhaps ... but what about externalities?

3/ "by offering banking in Spanish we make it easier for Spanish speakers to bank" true...but you also lower the incentives to learn English / make it easier for people to NOT learn English... ...and there are externalities to that. Societies are built on commonalities...

5/ I'm not mad, though. The collapse of the US is massively overdetermined. It's not like undoing this one bad idea would help anything. I just use it to elucidated a general principle about incentives at the margin and [ unseen ] externalities.

My very upper-class Mexican friend -- whose English was impeccable -- once decided to "press 2 for Spanish", and after a few moments just requested to be transferred to the English line. "This is not Spanish; it hurts my ears."

Not just that. "Built 100% in Spanish" implies English speakers are not welcome. (By contrast, all banks I've dealt with lately offered services in Spanish.) Now imagine the reaction to a bank that announced itself as "Built 100% in English for US English speakers."
