h/t @robinhanson I've got a half formed theory that authenticity is about cultural flow state. Ppl see others & identify them as "authentic", strive to match them as being embedded in societal signifiers ...but the act of trying to clone authenticity is actually the antithesishttps://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/1473234506513539072 …

3/ really perceiving and envying is someone who does not have a neurotic inner life where they WORRY about how they're perceived. The rugged guy loading his pickup truck with hay bales LOOKS like he's just focused on the task at hand, and knows who he is...something the viewer

8/ There's a default unexamined background axiom, at least in red tribe, that people were inherently more authentic in the past. Lots of "content peasant" memes, etc. Were people before the Current Year more authentic (i.e. in a cultural flow state, secure in who they were) ?

9/ We have no data at all. Just as the "1950s retvrn" LARPers based all of their knowledge of the 1950s off of TV sitcoms and Coke ads (all of which are constructed and fake), the "peasants were authentic" meme comes from media & assumptions.

difference between the guy loading his pickup truck with hay and the viewer is that the viewer is *watching (tv)*. I think 3/4 of a century of mass (visual, anyway, not sure to what degree radio contributed) media is increasing neuroticism. social media is gas on the fire.

the RETVRN thing is because the further back you go the less people's identities were influenced by their worries about how they were being perceived by increasingly large numbers of people watching them (or people like them).

Just to add onto the theory, there's a multi-billion dollar industry that's built around creating experiences for people that promise to help them achieve a flow state without actually having any actual end result or physical product to show for it.
