2/ If I had a guess, he's just piling up welding bead from the MIG in one spot, pouring heat in, making a puddle of nearly liquid steel, all masked under a pool of argon / co2. 3/ Red hot steel for blacksmithing is around 800°F. Molten steel in a welding puddle might be 2,600+°F.
