If anything, I suspect STEM pay has gone up -too much- in the sense that I can't help but keep wondering what the world would be like if the market had broken such that all the engineer hours that went into adtech had instead gone into SpaceX-shaped projects instead.

I am annoying conscious of the irrationality and counterfactuality but also I know so many people who were excellent hard scientists but (deservedly) escaped academia into software rather than getting to put their science chops to cooler uses.

Yeah, I work at a FAANG company and haven’t met any “bosses” who have majored in art history or any other liberal arts field. I also have no idea how this person could come to the conclusion that STEM pay is decreasing. Maybe for people working in the life sciences?

STEM is broader than the booming I.T. sector. Civil, electrical, mechanical, structural, chemical, aeronautical engineers are not remotely on the same curve as their colleagues in 'tech'.

Still getting paid pretty well, though. MechE friend just hopped jobs for a 25% raise.
