2/ so the affordance of the liner bag ("attention user! you MAY dump stick things here") is a bit of a lie, and "progress" results in backsliding, where people follow the implicit promise and thus behave less well, creating negative externalities

3/ so too with ubiquitous communication tech. The implicit promise is "you can update / change plans at any time you want"...and the negative externality is that (a) people do, and (b) others have to monitor devices and constantly renegotiate plans.
