/ Here I talk about some things I believe in and do on a regular basis, but not other things (as some of you know, I have multiple accounts for different purposes). Because that's how we adapt to this world of constant public performance.

/ One of the greatest weapons to destroy a performative identity is to disrupt it by revealing the things hidden by the performer. The Facebooker who posts about how rich she is can be broken by revealing that she's broke and in debt up to her eyeballs.

/ As Allie's example demonstrates, an Alpha Male persona & brand can be disrupted by revealing that he's a cuckold and took it up the ass a few times. This is the new form of assassination. Not killing the human being, but killing the brand. Killing the performative identity.

/ Brands and personas are in some ways more vulnerable than the human being(s) behind them. Public performance also invites public scrutiny. Every Karen who loses her shit on a grainy cell phone video is vulnerable to having her public personas ruined in 30 seconds.

/ It's not that some random woman lost her shit for 30 seconds on a particularly bad day that is so damaging. That shit happened long before the Internet, and wasn't newsworthy most of the time. Now it's that you can destroy a public persona with that video.

/ Even if you opt out of *creating* a brand and embracing performative identities, you're still bound by the unspoken rules; the "codes of conduct" created by the sum of performative online personas. Or else your mistake goes viral and kiss your job/business/whatever goodbye.

/ Performance is orthogonal to results. For example, it doesn't matter if you've done a lot of things to help {demographic group}. Say the wrong thing ONCE in front of a camera, and you're a horrible person. It doesn't matter if your net balance w/{group} is extremely positive

/ Similarly, you don't have to be an actual Alpha Male to craft the persona. Take a photo op on a Harley, slap on a plate carrier, shove a cigar in your mouth and use names with Viking-sounding shit in them, or words like "Throne" and bam, you have your performative identity.

/ In the era of microbranding, it may be inevitable that we all must have a brand, or brands, to make it in this world. But just as the best rhetoric is that which can be backed up by dialectic, maybe the best brands are those that are based on something real.

You know, I'm glad the worst that's happened to me is that I got accused of excessive thinness and a bad golf swing.
