Money works pretty well in the interim, tho. Although I think the larger point about "how do you get a bunch of people to coordinate around a goal that isn't immediately profitable to them?: Answer: Shift their utility functions to align more with said goal.

When JFK said “man on the moon by the end of the decade,” people latched onto that vision & made it happen. We’ve had moon-landing tech for 50 years now but the yearning to go there, the vision, has been absent.

Was thinking much along the same lines, with sufficient yearning, people would motivate themselves to learn the necessary skills. Peopled yearned to fly and leveraged that to learn the skills necessary to invent the airplane.
