1/ thread, with good questions and good observations I'm a bit older than robot, so while I def agree w "im not sure i can really relay the excitement that came from that time " I can also say that I've seen it 3-4 times before these eras happen for a season then end >>>https://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1470329312934916097 …

been thinking about this and tweeting somewhat less as i convalesce, clean my house, and take care of baby but a lot of ruminating what are we doing here? https://twitter.com/danlistensto/status/1469771125173350403 …

2/ I've been through maybe 4 cycles of "intellectual excitement is off the scale" * home computer revolution 1980-88 * internet goes real 1994-1998 * blogosophere boots up 2002-2008 * gray tribe Twitter 2014-2018 8 yrs on, 6 off 6 on, 6 off 4 on...3 and counting off ?

3/ One obvious question is: are these phases of the world, or phases of @morlockp ? (e.g. "the golden age of science fiction is 13"). Either way, though, I think the cycle holds. I expect we'll have another exciting age soon enough.

4/ mechanism of cycles (intellectual, diseases, business, empire) is fascinating and I think there's commonality between them. A new thing explodes onto the scene, there are no defenses (and also no parasites / grifters), and all of its implications need to be worked out- fun!

5/ In his thread @eigenrobot talks about cozypoasting, tending fires, mending walls, growing gardens. I think this is The Way. There are times when walls crumble, and that's when you climb through the breach. There are other times when walls are strong >>>

6/ ...and what benefit from banging one's skull against reenforced concrete? To everything there is a season. In the winter we tend hearthfires, polish the tribal songs, and retell the ancient myths. This is Good.

7/ oh, absolutely, the future is bright ...but I think @eigenrobot was specifically talking about intellectual ferment, so I limited myself to that https://twitter.com/bsmant/status/1470400389744893954https://twitter.com/bsmant/status/1470400389744893954 …

8/ but, yeah, 25-100 year timeline, I think we're in for an amazing ride: * rise of phyles at 90° to geography * rise of new currencies / org structures (DAO) * partial collapse of Westphalian system * multiplanetary species * new frontiers (the only place freedom thrives)

Yeah, as you say I think the "well, now what" question is why things fade out. Gray triber need something to actively work on to stay engaged. The intellectual depths have been largely mined out, and sadly most of our projects seem to have ultimately petered out/been co-opted.

5-6 years ago some interesting ideas were actually moved into implementation. The seasteaders in particular gave it a solid run. Made it far enough to get slapped down: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-thailand-seahome/thai-navy-boards-cabin-of-fugitive-seasteaders-facing-death-penalty-idUSKCN1RW06T … As you say, beating one's head against a concrete wall isn't wise.

Does it feel to anyone else as though our new “new things” spring forth as fully-formed homunculi with pre-installed parasites and grifters? VC seems to be getting so adept at this rotten game. They’re already destroying the decentralized web in the womb, for example.
