2/ You blame the ending, but the ending isn't the problem...it's the lack of an act 2 that's the problem, which sets up act 3 to utterly fail.

3/ Yep. He skips 2. 600 pages in to Termination Shock and there's no obstacles at all. I see what he's going to do to tie the threads together...so he's starting act 2 at page 620.https://twitter.com/skirtsnhose/status/1468048206063812608?t=6yEQEhHUCtz5Yn05xrjB0Q&s=19 …

4/ Yes, and in TS he has the interested people, but there's no interesting situation. They meet each other, and then get a tour of the facility. That takes 600 pages.

Stephenson at his best is less about plots per se, than "here's a bunch of interesting people caught in interesting events, let's see what happens."

I haven't started it yet; been busy. He does have some with a plot. Anathem and Seveneves are good examples of very interesting concepts that didn't quite go anywhere. Fall was wild but he had a very clear end target (payoff), though it definitely struggled in act 2.

I read him for his imagery of the future and fanciful sociology, plot is a secondary concern at best
