2/ Yeah, hmm, no. I hated my crappy small town and my antiintellectual peers, and I started planning at age 12 how could escape and go to college a year earlier. "Living with family during college" would be a reason to just skip college.https://twitter.com/HAHazony/status/1460592640236347401?t=Ds3qddmlH5n08c4S0BxxOQ&s=19 …

3/ I'm curious about the author. Most of the times I've run into someone on twitter who has such an extreme (unhealthy?) yearning to be dominated in adulthood by the presence and ideas of his father...I learn that he grew up without one.

6/ No. A healthy civilization raises young men who want to go out in the world, stand on their own two feet, and test themselves as free adults. We are not, may Allah forgive me, Italians or Greeks.https://twitter.com/Amos_5_18/status/1460804160455127040?t=AHyK9UvV6f0xE5CBXt_3fg&s=19 …

I have many thoughts on that thread, but the zeroth is that most people go to college at 18 and at 18 they shouldn't be tabula rasas for the college experience. So, I'd lay some —most, possibly— of the "blame"* in the pre-college years.

I agree with the thread, in the sense that most of the things that are learnt in academia (and primary schooling, which is really an extension of academia) are meta-lessons: how and why to know and think about things, rather than explicit facts or positions
-
hence the phenomenon of people getting the "software update" about the issue of the day - if somone's epistemology, reinforced for years, is "Academic Studies Say So" then obviously they'll synchronize their beliefs with the most "up-to-date" knowledge

I'm a conservative professor at a state regional in a conservative state -and we're still crazy lefty, despite being demographically the conservative school in the state. Parts of this seem like they might be good, but a lot of it is not quite right.

Deracination? I wish my students were deracinated. They go home every weekend, frequently skip class for family events, and go home every time a grandparent gets the sniffles (yes, yes, finals week -most dangerous time for grandparents, we make the joke, too).
