I largely agree with this short essay on taste, responses to art, and the possibilities, and limitations, of ranking art by quality. https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1460222704083214343 …

3/ I think I agree with this. As neophytes we are often wowed by things that are actually easy, and don't have the sophistication to tell the difference between something that is flashy (but easy) & something that is hard. There are two aspects of hardhttps://twitter.com/kendrictonn/status/1460254917801746437 …

I think a big part of taste comes from understanding the nature of a medium. What does it allow? Where it is limited? What is a painting, and how does it differ from a photograph? What things are easy to do or hard? https://twitter.com/MorlockP/status/1460252736650371075 …

4/ the first is trickiness in execution: hand cutting dovetails that fit together perfectly is hard, using a router template to do the same is easy (and thus dovetails that aren't easily cut by template are much more impressive than "perfect" ones)

5/ the second is places in the aesthetic space where "good" and "bad" are very very very close together, and thus it is not the hand of the artist, but the EYE of the artist that is demonstrated as excellent if you think about images of fractals, say, Mandelbrot set >>>

6/ there are realms that are, say, colored black and there is no red anywhere near them and other realms where red and black are cheek-by-jowl if you pick a black point far away from red points, you show no particular skill in precision or discrimination ...but if you pick a

8/ where the embarrassment is not bc what they did is BAD but because it's FINE buy they seem to think that it's worthy of display. For example, my Shaker style bookcases are FINE, and I know that they're fine-not-great. I use fine wood, I use fine finishing, it's of a piece.

9/ If I used walnut (pricey!) to execute the same exact design, it would indicate that my perception was flawed. You see people using expensive wood and then using mediocre finishes, or mediocre design (bad or no shadowlines, etc) & you realize that they have no aesthetic sense
