I’m debating doing a BS in engineering as a way out of education

If you think that programming might be of interest, I'd skip the BS and just go to a coding school like Lambda.

I think this is normally true even of a Master's, unless you know your field explicitly rewards it in proportion to its cost. In which case your goal should be to figure out the minimum needed to get the reward -- can you check the box with some online classes part-time?
-
Though there's also MBA school, which for some people can basically be a sabbatical. It's really fun and easy, and it keeps you from having a blank space on your resume. Which might justify the cost if you just need a break even if it doesn't pay for itself.

For large engineering orgs (excluding software) a Master's can pay back, especially a compressed BS/MS, because many orgs have explicit ~15% bonuses based solely on degree Software kids who like money should optimize almost exclusively for time-to-first-job

You learn an enormous amount in your first few years in high tech. Not a great trade for a PhD.

Literally never seems wrong, though I agree it’s suboptimal for 95% of PhDs. Basically the path I see is: a) rockstar, not a normal PhD, b) consult while still in school, c) consult after school, d) use PhD time to build network.
-
Obvious rejoinder: rockstar is doing most of the work, so anecdote: wrapping up my MSEE, I interviewed several places. none offered me more than i already made. a couple managers greeted me with i hear you walk on water. Then HR offered me slightly above midband MSEE.

There's a very thin line between a Nobel Prize and driving a courtesy van.https://www.discovermagazine.com/mind/how-bad-luck-and-bad-networking-cost-douglas-prasher-a-nobel-prize …

I almost missed the happy ending.
Until that point it's eerily similar to Walter White's back story in Breaking Bad.
