I have a 12 year old civil engineering degree that still gives me value despite a checkered work history. I somehow managed to take all the pointless humanities courses I want to as well. I am consistently surprised at the shelf-life of a basic engineering degree.

Engineering seems to be one of the last bastions of net beneficial formal education, along with law & medicine. However, there are many engineers that don't ever learn the practical hands-on skills that the trades that support their profession require. This is to their detriment.

When I worked at a factory years ago, a job that only required high school, a bunch of my coworkers were people with liberal arts degrees. The factory paid more than what any of them could make in a job that required their degree. It was an eye opening experience for me.

I used to struggle to explain my lack of concern to people who ask how we plan to afford college for four closely-spaced children. Now I don’t bother explaining, and just laugh.
