The problem is that each decade the regulatory burden is allowed to delay new plants the technical challenges grow as engineers retire and die. We skipped almost two full generations of plant design as the entire industry got fucked to death by the NRC.

I don't know much about this subject, but in general principle, yeah... you have to risk failure to succeed. This is why I didn't make fun of SpaceX when their prototype rockets blew up and shit. Each failure led to the experience necessary to build the working version.

May be a bit of an underestimate, even realizing that the technical issues are more severe than most people see, too. An NRC chairman (for three years!) later wrote a Wapo opinion literally titled "I oversaw the U.S. nuclear power industry. Now I think it should be banned."
