what is your technical analysis of the problems with the proposed approach ?https://twitter.com/Tinkzorg/status/1457676111131860995 …

You have to be fantastically credulous to believe in imminent "comercially viable" fusion power in 2021. Like how are there still adult men with above room temperature IQs that fall for this stuff? Even a Grug can recount how many decades fusion power has been "close" by now.

The big red flag with fusion breakthroughs is if you want to produce power, why choose fusion over fission?

safety / lack of toxic byproducts? but, yes, I'm a fission fan as well, always have been

Fusion plants will produce roughly the same amount of radioactive waste as well-run fission fast/breeder plants that can burn their own waste. Safety-wise you can get passive safety with pebble beds, freeze plugs, particle accelerator assisted subcritical arrangements etc.

yep, am familiar with pebble bed and other safe fission technologies I'd love to see a Common Reference Fission Plant design, with some sort of regulatory approval (free of liability if constructed exactly according to fedgov approved plan), and then assembly line mass produce

No, but you can trust QA when you're literally producing individual reactor vessels that are a truck bed friendly size on a literal production line. Everything else on a nuclear plant is the same as coal. Fuel sold separately but would be the same deal.

yeah that would help but what I think we really need is the @elonmusk of fission. People spent decades discussing and building exotic propulsion to get to LEO but all we really needed was the same old stuff we already had, but reusable.

I think the problem w fission is 90% regulatory / legal, and 10% technical
