Regardless of what you think of physicians, the entire point of establishing this basic gulf of knowledge is to move past the "But what is your technical analysis here?" line of questioning, and draw out that this relies on a faith in Thiel's powers as an investor.
-
Some people believe in our Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, others believe in Peter Thiel. Faith is a wonderful thing. As long as people are open about it, that is.

Thiel is also likely not trying to understand the physics at the level of the experts, but is himself looking to authorities and evaluating whether they can get it done. So it’s more an evaluation of people and the market, which is exactly the domain of a good VC.

Also, appeal to authority isn't always a fallacy. "This guy knows a lot about X, so I trust him more than you, Mr. Rando" is a valid argument.
-
For instance, on a medical topic, I am far more likely to side with
@JoeSilverman7 than Mr. Read Some WebMD Once. Appeals to authority fail more often, perhaps, when credentials get confused for authority, or when the quoter misunderstands the authority.
