amusingly, "chosen one" trope is anathema to both left of center folks (like @Hugo_Book_Club ), and tech-com right-of-center libertarians types (like me). Lefties want everyone to be equal-ish, and libertarians want folks to be unequal...via choices made w free will & hard workhttps://twitter.com/Hugo_Book_Club/status/1455724159107928065 …

3/ Cool. Also, yes, I think lefties often acknowledge hard work ... but then they tend to have a countervailing impulse which is, after someone works hard and gets rewards, they want to claw a lot of that back. c.f. 4/ I find "chosen one" tropes boring bc it removes a lot of the intra-personal drama of "what do I want? do I have the grit to achieve it?", and replaces it w the tedious "will I admit to myself that I'm Jesus?". ...but de gustibus.https://twitter.com/edwardcossette/status/1456276572994998273 …

I have no problem with the ‘chosen one’ trope. No, I wouldn’t want every novel to feature it, but I seem to always enjoy the ones I’ve read, though, these tend to be with a ‘chosen hero but with flaws/problems/it ain’t all easy’ tarnish.

Not only that, but Cypher, the antichrist figure contrasted with Neo, explicitly wants to be a minor celebrity: rich, but of little consequence.

Also "chosen one" is based on retrospective pattern matching around great men of history
