Watching BLACK WIDOW (2021) and I like the choice to make it a Marvel-ized spy flick but director Cate Shortland and screenwriters Eric Pearson, Jac Schaeffer, and Ned Benson take more of a journeyman approach rather than really leaning into the whole Marvel-ized spy flick.

Some of it is editing, too — there are a lot of scenes and beats that go on too long — but mostly it just feels not quite there. Doesn’t lean enough into the madcap nature of Marvel spy stories.

Like, this movie should have had Martín Campbell directing, a kickass hero theme, and a ridiculous opening credits sequence with Scarlett Johansson rappelling down the shirtless torsos of every male Avenger.
