I've had this same though many times living in upstate NY. It's easy to understand why those colonists loved turkeys. There are an awful lot of them.

I can still hear ours sometimes, but they’ve gotten scarcer even in the mere six years we’ve lived in Arkansas. My understanding is the fire ants are making it hard for a ground-nesting bird to survive here.
