Star Trek shows a wonderful post scarcity world where every material thing can be duplicated...but power and rank (the one thing everyone craves) is allocated by The Party. Of course commies love it - it's got commie power politics and capitalist wealth characteristics.https://twitter.com/BoomerNiner/status/1452772603559616512 …

3/ Offscreen! The plates (ah, I mean starships) fly around for no discernable cause! Clearly it is the will of the proletariat that decides who gets promoted and what happens, and this will is...expressed...somehow...indirectly...https://twitter.com/amendlocke/status/1452786397706866689?t=Re6YeLCeVxO1X7_t-2GFFw&s=19 …

So, no evidence! There's no suggestion the UFP came about through class struggle. I see it as pretty much home-grown American utopian socialism (with the Vulcans as persuasive example that convinces people).

Also, re "no evidence": I suggest that debating Star Trek is like the schoolyard topic of "who'd win: Superman or a terminator that was also a vampire?". A certain degree of casualness with evidence (shitposting) is expected!

Ok, fair! I defer to you on the academic definition of communism (it's only true communism if it came from the class-struggle region of France, otherwise it's just Sparkling American Socialism?). I was using the term to indicate only personal property, no private property.

Yes, that's communism all right! I just meant that 'the Party' isn't necessarily a feature (or bug) of every imagined communist society.

Valid. One can IMAGINE a communist society without an elite class, I suppose...but a fundamental rule of science fiction is that you only get ONE impossible invention, and Trek already has FTL !

I'm pretty sure the Federation has elites, but I doubt they are a Party claiming to implement the will of the proletariat! For all we know the UFP could work just the same as actually existing democracies.

may Allah forgive me, that is worse than communism!
