10/ First, I doubt this ... but even if true, what of it? New generations arise, with new preferences. Why should we double the cost of a building to make it last for twice as long ...when we're not even sure people will want it.https://twitter.com/TFB_Nathaniel_F/status/1447905481469702145 …

A point I think the "trads" have is that a lot of these suburban buildings are not designed to last very long. Maybe eternal construction is too expensive sure, but buildings with a 30 year lifespan (which may not even last that long) seem excessively short-lived to me.

In Europe, you have plenty of buildings like this. They seem to do fine with it. Arguably better (data too noisy to say for sure).

Costs are high and birth rates are low. Not a great sign.

Costs are not that high in Austria. http://www.statistik.at/web_en/statistics/PeopleSociety/housing/housing_costs/index.html … You can see rent per square meter is about 2/3rds that of San Antonio (pulled out of a hat).

Cost of living in Austria is about 4% higher than the US but the US covers Nowhere, Ohio and NYC so thats not saying much. Low rents but high costs of goods, with lower quality and selection and, usually, less space on average than the US.

Right but we're talking buildings. So Austria has lower rents, and buildings that on average last much longer (hundreds of years not uncommon there). Yes buildings are smaller there, but that is because many of them are from the 18th Century.

"You see, schnitzel in Austria is more expensive than hot dogs in Pittsburgh, so we should keep making disposable buildings that go bad in 30 years." You're stretching it a bit thin there.

Man, I could go for some schnitzel… Thankfully, the market responds to demand of what folks actually buy.

I would think the rents would be the stronger indicator. And what's wrong with building to last? How is that supposed to be more expensive in the long run? You've got Amish in the Northeast working with better materials for less money and making stuff that lasts 100 years.

The Amish, building with wood, are using better materials than normal home builders, who build with wood? What?

Here I come to pull things out of my ass. Modern homes could last 100+ years most people do not upkeep their homes well enough to accomplish this. Homes made from wood take upkeep. The only thing that wouldn't would be like stone?

In fact I might argue homes built with roof trusses and floor trusses would last longer than house built in the early 1900s that don't use trusses, just stick framing.
