Helping my wife negotiate something. Her: "I've never gotten XXX before!" Me: "That's because you've never asked for it."

2/ I'm reminded of a negotiation I did for a contract ~5 years ago. them: what's your rate? me: $X/hr them: the last guy was getting 0.7X me: you fired him bc he couldn't deliver, right? and you need this done immediately? them: we've never paid > 0.8 X

3/ me: I understand. It doesn't sound like this is going to work. Best of luck. me: <hangs up> third party <via Slack>: WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THAT?!?!? me: the point of that is that they're going to call back inside of 15 minutes and tell me - hang on, my phone's ringing.

4/ I had a convo w a friend a while back on the topic of rates. I suggested that he increase his rates by 50%. He said that he'd lose some clients. I asked "if you lose 33% of your clients, but keep the rest at the new rate, what happens to your total pay, and vacation?"

FWIW women really do have to negotiate differently. I've always done very well, but I spend a lot of time in what a guy friend called "full cringe"--explaining that while it rips me apart to compromise our relationship with tawdry demands for cash, I have to think of my family.

8/ a few thoughts: * I absolutely think that men and women are judged different for the exact same behavior. A guy can do a typical woman thing and appear weak / cringe / ghey, a woman can do a typical male thing and be seen as a harridan / ball-buster / overly brusque.

10/ how guys negotiate are going to be selected by the guys telling the stories, and thus are part of a game of signalling. Every fish gets larger in the retelling. Every negotiation that goes well gets retold. Those that flame out do not make good stories.

11/ I think that when people operate in their comfort zone they have good knowledge of the boundaries, and know the difference between pushing them a bit, and blowing through them. When people operate outside their comfort zones, those subtleties become invisible.

12/ A few key points about negotiation: * you can never do better than the other side's BATNA. If all of the other carpenters are quoting $40-50/hr, you can maybe get 50 or even 51, but not 90. * it's super important to create euvoluntary trades ("absence of regret")

13/ To expand on that last: there is a certain amount of meat on the platter. I encourage you to get half of it ... maybe even 60% of it. ...but don't take all of it. You want the other party to be glad that he did business with you, & not nurse a grudge ITERATED game theory

Sure, that's absolutely right. But I think that's a peril of getting coached through a negotiation by a guy--he may not mention stuff that he just instinctively knows about guy negotiations through tacit experience of guy-ness, and some of that might not work anyway.

I want to concur with @asymmetricinfo here. I am a professional contract negotiator (and have been for 20 years) and the way I (as a woman) have to negotiate for myself is VERY different than if I had to negotiate for myself if I was a man. I have to take a softer approach.

Conversely, I'd probably emphasize the stuff I do to preserve the relationship, and not the stuff I do that is, um, making demands, because that's the stuff that is forefront of my mind when I'm negotiating--and a guy who tried to implement on my instructions might come off weird

18/ ok, a quick moment between CI runs: anti-fragility makes it much easier to ask for higher numbers if you're living paycheck to paycheck and NEED to bill 40 hours next week to make the rent, you are trapped at a local optima where you can't risk even a 1% chance of losing >
