It works better now because it's pointed more squarely at more susceptible people. In the 90s the economy was good enough to provide a self-apparent rationale to Griller America; now it's not.

I suspect this be tied to cognitive miserliness, brains prioritize thinking about things that they value, and don't scrutinize things they don't consider important. So poorly done propaganda can be absolutely terrible if it doesn't trip scrutiny. And if so, no one is immune.

And unfortunately, none of that changes that propaganda allows papering over today's problems, such that they fester unnoticed and unaddressed.

Psychologically, the purpose of propaganda in recent years has been 1) to inform people of the direction that power/herd opinion is moving, and 2) to give a superficial justification for following the herd. The more atomized and oversocialized people are, the more it works!
