The entire lower deck is covered. And in seriousness, a big tent is an option. It's not ideal, but it's no worse than a hotel conference room

the lower deck is not, IIRC, accessible from inside the house w/o going to the upper deck, right? I know you're in love w the venue bc (a) charming, (b) cancel proof, but ... I think you're deluding yourself re its appropriateness for 150 people /shrug

Not a matter of being in love. It's balancing the features "pleasant place to spend 2+ days" and "uncancellable" against "less sensitive to inclement weather" and "more scalable"

And when you double the event to 300 the next year? Or 600 the following year? The best time to find a more scalable site was before the last BasedCon - I understand: 1st time, it worked out well. The next best time to find a more permanent scalable site is before next time.

Scalability is good, but it's pretty far down on my list right now. Beating it out are (1) price; (2) our familiarity with the current site; (3) safety/remoteness from urban area; (4) a venue owner who won't cancel us

I think that place should work for one more year. It might get a little cramped with 150 people but should be manageable. The 2023 con will probably need to be elsewhere.

I think 150 in there is a very bad idea but... not my rodeo, so I'll shut up.

I will probably keep it lower than that. Let me put it this way: what's the maximum number of people you will tolerate,
@MorlockP ? :D3 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -

Srs, tho, it's more about DENSITY, and I think that the indoor density last time was about maximum for an acceptable con. One possible failure mode: remember during the kickstarter panel and someone from MSFT talked about "catastrophic success"? If you get too many people in

Scalability is an issue, but is also largely an issue that doesn't have to be dealt with immediately. Cap next year to a limit the venue (whatever venue) can handle, grow each year, find a new venue when needed. Weather is a bigger issue.

150 people in that space + big rain = absolutely ruined event IMO
