/ First, that's cut stone, not field stone. Stones don't come out of the ground with straight edges and a square shape. To get stones like that, you have to either quarry them, or dig them up from your fields and square them up.

/ To quarry stones like this, you first need to forge a star drill, and then forge a LOT of feathers-and-wedges. You can see a set of feathers-and-wedges that I forged (to the left of the drill bit).pic.twitter.com/OA0sBuRSxV

/ These are not the hardest thing in the world to forge, but already I'm LOL-ing at WoG saying that pretty much anyone can do this "with basic instruction". You also need a star drill, which is also not too hard to drill, but you need to know how to pick a decent >>>

/ hardenable steel, how to file the face of it, and how to harden and quench it. Then it's simple: just hold the star drill in one hand as a [ very very very ] trusted friend swings a sledge hammer right at the top of the drill. Rotate the bit around 1/4 turn w each strike

/ In just 10 or 15 minutes you can drill a hole. Drill a row of 5 or so holes. Then put the feathers into the holes, in pairs, and then put a wedge into each set of feathers. Tap the wedges in turn, until the rock splits.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMsCMBjJXSA …

/ Congrats. Now you've got one rock. You need about 400 more to build this small building. ...but don't start building yet! You've gotta dig down a foot or so into the ground to reach compacted earth for your foundation. You're going to need a pick AND a shovel.

/ Pick and shovel work isn't rocket science ... but there is a bit of technique to it. Remember to slide your top hand down the pick as you swing. Don't bend over too far. Alternate sides and hands every 20 or so swings.

/ The pick never needs to be sharpened, but the shovel does. Make sure to bring a hand file with you, and maybe a file card to keep it clean.

/ Now, after several weeks of work, you have excavated a trench and built up a supply of square edged rocks. Now we get to layout and string work. You think stacking a vertical wall is a no-brainer that anyone can do? No, masons are not idiots; they have techniques.

/ I spent a week working alongside a professional mason, repairing a stone foundation of a house in Bridgeport CT [ spring break in college, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity ]. It's hard work, and not unskilled.

/ anyway, I could go on, but you get the point: ONCE AGAIN, Wrath of Gnon doesn't know what he's talking about ONCE AGAIN, Wrath of Gnon has absolutely no idea in the labor or skill involved in stuff that he says is easy

/ FWIW, I'd be amazed if Gnon has ever built shit in his life. He doesn't talk like a guy who knows a hawk from a handsaw.https://twitter.com/upstatefederlst/status/1440421103319465986 …

/ Great book! Also, as I mentioned at
@based_con over the weekend: the title of that book was inspiration, via a bit of wordplay, for the title of my first novel.https://twitter.com/EricMertz_KC/status/1440424931372646403 …Show this thread -
/ also, since we're point out how WoG doesn't know crap about crap: you can't use lime alone to hold stones together. Among other reasons, a mortar of lime + water will be too soft and will squish out under the weight of courses of stone. Need sand.https://twitter.com/undrbedMonster/status/1440425325708525572 …

/ Also, as I read this thread on pick and shovel work, I'm reminded of the time a few years back when Patrick of P_pehat was trying to subtweet me and used the phrase "soft handed nazi". I guess he reflected for a moment and then deleted the tweet.

Another line would be to ask to see Gnon's stone chicken coup, since it's apparently a $20 weekend hobbyist project.
It's pretty, but it's a giant amount of work.
