If I build a machine, say a ship for hauling cargo across the ocean, few have a problem with my selling it to somebody else or leasing it to an operator in return for income. But if I invent something, say a way to navigate that ship, I'm supposed to give it away?

Because technology is applied physics. Just as certain particles cause a useful effect when arranged just so, certain material components create a useful device when arranged just so. Inventions are discoveries. Take your finder's fee and be content.

It's the corporations lobbying Congress to change laws that are REALLY rent seeking. But you could argue it's borderline RS to draw upon the corpus of human knowledge to make a widget and expect lifelong rights. You mined public land; take your finder's fee and be content.
