3/ there are two stable points in the state space: 1) build one -> it's so expensive -> can't afford to build more 2) build 500 -> they're so cheap -> maybe build another 500 why not? YOLO !

fully agree that that's the long term solution, but launch cost is a rounding error for space based astronomy Falcon Heavy being cheaper than Delta IV Heavy really doesn't matter here, when the payload is in the billions

the way I can see fully space based astronomy happening is with something like Starship making mass and volume effectively free compared to today at that point, you can change your payload design philosophy pretty radically. A big reason why James Webb is so expensive
