Were you to read more, there is a look at the negative effects of Universal Basic Income. It made it into the show as well. Derivative, yeah, but Niven ain't doing Known Space any more, so I'll take it. Reynolds too.
I really liked the Joe Miller/Julie Mao story (a man falling in love with the woman he is trying to find, despite being wildly different classes). Sure, derivative of a lot of love stories -but at least it was based on something more than tight abs. I see no reason for the rest
I personally enjoyed the "realizes everyone thinks he's a joke" piece of Miller's story. The dive into depression and its subsequent role in his later choices was prob my fav part of the book. I'm finding book 2 a lot more fun to read than book 1 though.
