I strongly dislike Edward Hopper's art everything is flat, and seems to be worthless, valueless, unesteemed, and purely physical it's perfect art for an atheist, materialist culture, even encapsulating the depression that's downstream of such a worldviewhttps://twitter.com/artisthopper/status/1435946223375159297 …

3/ me: everything is flat, and seems to be worthless, valueless, unesteemed, and purely physical Elam: no you are wrong, he painted things to look flat because he wanted to convey loneliness and alienation this is your 𝒓𝒆𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒕𝒂𝒍, bro ?https://twitter.com/ElamBend/status/1436055357713965057 …

It's amazing to see you so wrong on something. Hopper primarily painted light and shadow - thus, the flatness, which emphasized this. Beyond that one of the big themes of his painting was the lonlines and atomization of urban life.

So, I almost, but don't, agree with the last two paragraphs (I v much like Hopper, as re: paragraph 1). I'll preface this by saying that I don't know anything about him, or what he said about his work, but let's look at some Hoppers. https://twitter.com/MorlockP/status/1435952214552551425 …

6/ I confess that while the second one is much much better, I still dislike the very intentional flat effect it reminds me a lot of Nagel, even if not quite so extremepic.twitter.com/4VGYULGSVo

7/ now, that said, I certainly understand and support experimentation at artistic extremes; it's good that we have Nagel to see just how far you can go in pure flatness, and there's even a good argument about how Nagel's style is social commentary

9/ this seems to be the consensus among people who actually know what they're talking about - I'll now get back to tweeting on topics I know something about (pumpkin and onion harvest this weekend, perhaps)https://twitter.com/asymmetricinfo/status/1436062042146869250 …

To me Hopper seems to be chronicling the struggle against modern anomie, demonstrating the beauty of those who insist on believing there is more, not endorsing the flatness

I wouldn't call it either, since it's not a clear factual question. Let's just call it a presentation of how I read 'em.

I agree strongly with both of you, I keep flickering between "these are amazing" and "ugh" and I like it when art makes me do that, so I guess that means I like hopper? 🤔

For me the washed-out colors are the real turn-off. I'm sure he's using them for effect - c.f. his sailboat painting downthread, with relatively vivid color - but they create an effect I find depressing and unenjoyable. It may be art, even great art, but I wouldn't seek it out.
