This is absolutely false. (a) there is only one genetically modified tree that's being grown, and it's not pine (b) genetic engineering as an industry barely started in the 1980s (c) the picture shows what pine looks like when grown in an open space vs dense canopy coverhttps://twitter.com/Trad_West_Art/status/1435205932074643457 …

'In the 70s, forestry scientists began developing "genetically modified pine trees" which grew super fast. 50 years later, you can tell the difference between pinewood from the early 1970s and pinewood from the early 2020s.' https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10224173531659824&set=a.1418916866748 … pic.twitter.com/UoBEoKhhh1

2/ even if it WAS true, fast growing GE pine would be awesome, because it would (a) lower timber costs, and (b) reduce the amount of forest acres that we need to dedicate to industrial harvesting, letting more fall back into old growth. People Just !@#-ing Say Things

Funny thing (I build musical instruments on the side) in spruce, ring width doesn't really determine the density of the lumber either (specifically Picea Rubens) I've had ultra wide plates that are as dense as any super fine growth rate. It's really aesthetics.

Even if trad is wrong about the genetic engineering, it's absolutely factual that the quality of the wood they're selling now is significantly worse

I suspect you can find lumber on the market now that's just as good as anything from before, it's just that it's a more expensive specialty market

Clear-cutting old growth forests is trad now apparently.

This is a goofy argument. Today's buildings are measurably, verifiably stronger than historical structures made with old growth lumber.

there is something to the "modern buildings collapse sooner" thing, but no reason to think it's not just a big case of selection bias bc the houses built in the 1920s that collapsed after 50 years aren't around nowadays for people to disapprovingly compare to the 70s ones
