2/ even if it WAS true, fast growing GE pine would be awesome, because it would (a) lower timber costs, and (b) reduce the amount of forest acres that we need to dedicate to industrial harvesting, letting more fall back into old growth. People Just !@#-ing Say Things

Even if trad is wrong about the genetic engineering, it's absolutely factual that the quality of the wood they're selling now is significantly worse

I suspect you can find lumber on the market now that's just as good as anything from before, it's just that it's a more expensive specialty market

there is something to the "modern buildings collapse sooner" thing, but no reason to think it's not just a big case of selection bias bc the houses built in the 1920s that collapsed after 50 years aren't around nowadays for people to disapprovingly compare to the 70s ones
