Part of the reason the Special Forces got so much attention for their effectiveness in VN was because of the contrast with regular forces - SF didn't have to put up with as much 'Big Army' BS, but they also didn't tolerate anti-mission insubordination at all.

The 'take over' of the ships was a running problem for most the next couple decades in the Navy, with criminal gangs operating freely in some ships and with multiple ships (esp carriers and battleships) having areas that were 'no go' for officers and/or caucasians.

the thread goes with suspicious "grassroots" & "across front lines" angle, whereas the centers of propaganda were in US: hollywood and media, and various socialist orgs. a reversal of sorts: "people did from their hearts" figleaf over USSR-trained or sponsored propaganda.

Big part of the move to all volunteer force. But also tightening things up in the Navy and other branches. Like almost all institutions, by the time it hits the 70s there was a lot of rot and rust that was allowed to happen. Reason for pizzas for Afghan troops.
