There's two ways to lay carpet. If your carpet has a foam squishy lawyer under it you can pull it up like Morlock says - it's just held down by tack strips that grip it like Velcro around the edges of the room. You don't actually have to cut around the edges...

They make teensy little pry bars that sell for 5 or 6 bucks that will work a lot easier than a normal sized pry bar when pulling out any leftover small tacks.
