The metric for fiscal success is now "does your work appeal to enough eyeballs" and not "does your work appeal to people in publishing". The second was an ok proxy for the first for quite some time, until it stopped being that. Also significant is that "enough" is self-defined.

seems like basically the dominant technique these days is to build up a dedicated fanbase through online interaction and then use crowdfunds/patreon/etc to supplement actual book sales
