Noticed weird things happening on Amazon: a ton of ebooks on the site have been quietly disappearing. Like the entire American Robotech series. There, then gone before I could buy it. Large run of Doc Savage novels. Gone. Over 100 Deathlands ebooks. There 6 mths ago. Nope. /1

My theory would be that when Amazon was trying to launch the Kindle they were desperate for content, trying to show that large numbers of books were available for it. It may be that they induced publishers to make ebooks of their back stock available at attractive terms.

Suppose also that they offered contracts of X years, ten or fifteen or however long it's been. Now those contracts are expiring and Amazon no longer needs to bulk up its library and is letting those titles lapse in favor of more recently acquired books with lower royalties.
