I remember the stories that for his earlier books, like red planet and such, that he actually did the math on orbital trajectories and such. Always thought that was cool.

I remember that as well, and half remember two other details: maybe Ginny helped him w some of the math, and he screwed it up at least once in - IIRC - Farmer in the Sky, with an alignment of Jovian moons that was impossible bc of an integer resonance between the orbits
