Interesting thread on TV writing, and the value of being acquainted with multiple places in/perspectives on a process. I think occasionally about my own background with art models, and where that started. (1/)https://twitter.com/tonytost/status/1428755317492310023 …

I work with models a lot in my own career now, and I always wanted to draw/paint from life, but let's go back to before I ever drew the live model. I'm a college student, an English major who's drawing a lot but entirely from imagination or books.

Anyway, I'm in my dorm one day, when my lesbian friend A. stops by, sits on my bed, and says "Kendric, the art department is hiring models for figure drawing classes. They need a male and a female. I'm applying, and so are you."

...well, ok, then. I did, in fact, decide to go through with it. (I was a little nerve wracked, certainly, though between high school & college dorm showers, gymnasium showers, and onsen in Japan, maybe not that nerve wracked.)

So, anyway, by the time I'm actually working with models in class, I have that background already. "OK, that pose just can't be held more than five minutes; model's leg is inevitably gonna fall asleep in that pose; room is comfortable for me, so probably cold for model" Etc.

And it's a background I'm really, really glad to have, as I work with people in my own artistic career. I think it helps me, and helps them, that I have some first-hand acquaintance with the things I'm asking them to do.

Finally, check out this painting I sat for--I have pants, don't get excited--by one of my art school instructors, Maureen Hyde. Was a great experience. Difficult pose, but Maureen is a wonderful person & getting to watch her work was so good for me. https://www.maureenhyde.com/ pic.twitter.com/ozZyB3Zcru
